A Date that Will Live in Infamy
U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared war against Japan on this day, December 8, 1941. When Pearl Harbor Hawaii, a major base of the USAFFE, was being attacked by the Japanese, the news reached the Philippines at 3:00am local time on Dec. 8. A few hours after, at exactly 12:40pm, a Japanese group of bomber planes attacked Clark Airbase in Subic, Pampanga. A very historical day that altered the course of Philippine history.
We were on the verge of independence from the United States set on July 4, 1946. For 6 years since 1935, the Philippines had been preparing for its eventual independence, establishing roads and bridges, forming its own police force and military, forging a national language for the myriad of cultures in the archipelago, setting up a Filipino-based education, restructuring our government bureaucracy, igniting industries. We felt the labor pains of having our own economy to make and to manage. During that time we knew who we wanted to separate from…we knew who we were. All this was shattered when the Japanese invaded the Philippines. Indeed, a day of infamy.
