Intramuros -  Manila, Philippines

The tip of Intramuros (or what was then called the city of Manila, in contrast with the province of Manila that used to encompass other towns surrounding Intramuros) was a very strategic point where the Pasig River and Manila Bay meet. It was the main entrance of ships to the interior lands of the Manila area when there were no low bridges on the said river yet. In fact, this was the main reason why the pre-colonial settlement of Rajah Soliman, Lakandula and Rajah Matanda was built there. All the Chinese junks, and other ships at Manila Bay used to pass through this river delta. The ingenuity of such a settlement built on this strategic point is just amazing.
On this very site now stands Fort Santiago built during the early years of Spanish colonization. It’s just a stone’s throw away from the Manila Cathedral, Palacio del Gobernador and the Ayuntamiento, the Spanish Philippines’ centers of power depicting the convoluted union of “Catholic church as Spanish and Spain as Catholic.” The fort has been known for its historical significance, where the prison cell of Jose Rizal in his last moments was located and where it used to be a storage area for weapons during the American period. In the Japanese occupation it also became a torture site for American and Filipino captives. Today, at the center of the fort stands a statue of Jose Rizal with a book on hand. You can even trace the footprints (footprint metal plate) of the hero as he was led to his prison cell.
