Proposed parking building over the Pasig River, beside Sta. Cruz Bridge.

IndioHistorian’s Log, Supplemental-turned-sorta-like-a-social-commentary: I pass by Sta. Cruz plaza and bridge every single day on my way to work. It’s so sad that Philippine history is full of what-could-have-beens. These photos of clean streets of Manila, of a clean and glistening Pasig River, of unconstructed blueprints that would have made Manila at par with cities of the world that have renowned landmarks—would make any Filipino sigh with regret. Dati ‘yan eh. Ngayon iba na we would say, with a fatalistic stance. I pass by the still unrenovated Manila Metropolitan Theatre with pain. Careful not to blame those who came before us, that’s the character that was produced in me while researching Philippine history. The past generation have contexts, and all had real problems that we would not even be sure if we would have done any better were we in their place.
But what are these unkept Manila streets and unfulfilled plans reflect but the logical conclusion of the pervading corrupt politics of the mid-40s down to our time? Our economic standing falling from the 60s to the present simply followed suit. Our politics then was a ticking time bomb. These, and all that many of us blame our country for, are simply that darkness that we all have a part of. One would think, is making the Philippines first world the real answer? I just find that too shallow for an answer.
Hay. All that ideas triggered by all these nice old photos. Thank you again @correosfilipinas
